About Carr & Westley | Classic British Women’s Clothing, Made in Kent Since 1919
For over a century we’ve been crafting timeless, quality garments for women who value comfort, elegance and heritage. From our workshop at Bourne Mill in Hadlow, Kent, we design skirts, dresses, trousers and nightwear that flatter the female figure, stand up to real life and celebrate British manufacturing.
Family-run and proudly local, Carr & Westley remains committed to thoughtful design, careful fit and enduring quality — because we believe clothes should never compromise on comfort or style.
Who We Are & What We Do
- Founded in 1919, originally operating from a small workshop in Central London.
- Over 100 years of heritage in designing and manufacturing women’s clothing for British women.
- We create classic ladieswear and nightwear, blending traditional style with comfort and quality.
- All our Carr & Westley label garments — skirts, trousers, dresses (and selected items) — are still designed and produced on-site at Bourne Mill in Hadlow, Kent.
Our Story & Heritage
From London workshops to a Kent watermill — our journey reflects resilience, adaptation and a commitment to craftsmanship:
- In 1919 we started making smart daywear and occasional dresses in central London.
- During WWII, our workshop was destroyed in the Blitz. We temporarily relocated to St Ives, Cornwall and contributed to the war effort.
- After the war, with London property limited, we moved to the Kent countryside — renovating an 11th-Century watermill as our new home and workshop.
- We recruited local seamstresses to re-build our business — and ever since, we have remained rooted in Kent, supporting local employment and manufacturing.
Our Philosophy — Fit, Comfort & Timeless Style
We’ve always believed that clothes should be more than fashion — they should fit well, feel comfortable and flatter real women’s bodies.
- Our design philosophy is “considered design”: we know where garments need room, where to take room away, and how to style pieces to enhance the natural female figure.
- If a garment doesn’t meet our standards for fit + comfort + style, we simply won’t stock it.
- We serve women who appreciate classic British style, comfort-led clothing, and domestic manufacturing — whether for everyday wear, occasions, or for comfort-focused items like nightwear and pyjamas.
