A Traditional Guide to Measuring Your Bra Size

From Carr & Westley – Fitters of Fine Garments Since 1919

Finding a bra that fits well is one of the most important things you can do for both comfort and confidence. A properly fitted bra offers support, enhances your silhouette, and feels like a second skin. This guide will help you measure yourself at home using just a tape measure and a touch of know-how.

Step 1: Measuring Your Underband

“The foundation of every good fit begins beneath the bust.”

Bra Sizing

To measure your underband (the part of the bra that sits snugly around your ribcage), take a soft measuring tape and follow these simple steps:

1. Stand upright in front of a mirror, wearing a non-padded bra or no bra at all.
2. Wrap the tape measure around your ribcage, just underneath the bust.
3. Make sure the tape is level all the way round and firm but not tight.
4. Take the measurement in inches.

What does the number mean?

  • If your measurement is an even number, add 4 inches.

  • If your measurement is an odd number, add 5 inches.

Example: If you measure 31 inches, add 5 to get a band size of 36.

Step 2: Measuring Your Bust Size

“Now for the bit that defines the cup.”

  1. Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust—usually across the nipples.
  2. Ensure the tape is level and not pressing into the bust.
  3.  Take this measurement in inches too.

Step 3: Finding the Cup Size

To determine your cup size, subtract your underband size (from Step 1) from your bust measurement (from Step 2).

Example:

  • Bust: 39 inches

  • Underband (bra size): 36

  • Difference: 3 inches

Each inch of difference corresponds to a cup size:

Difference (inches) Cup Size
1" A
2" B
3" C
4" D
5" DD
6" E
7" F
8" FF
9" G

Helpful Hints from the Fitting Room

  • Straps should not dig in or slip off. Adjust them until they sit comfortably on the shoulder.

  • The band should lie flat and firm around the body without riding up.

  • The centre front of the bra should sit flush against your chest.
